So it’s said that we need more gun control. We have these shootings and we need to get guns out of the hands of the public. Guns are dangerous! We need to allow the police and the government access to these weapons, but not the public. The crowd cannot be trusted with them. The public can’t control their big ‘ol nasty guns. These guns take advantage of our poor ignorant citizens and kill people. We’re told it’s not the owners fault. It’s the weapons’. We’re told our children and ourselves will be safer with these “gun free zones”. We need to control and regulate. Regulate and control. Control, control, control. Regulate, regulate, regulate. Guns are bad. Guns kill people. Guns are not necessary. Regular people do not need guns. WE WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU.
No.
In my humble opinion, this whole discussion is based on a faulty premise. The premise of the government can take away one of our Constitutional Rights. They can’t. So the discussion is moot.
The logic is illogical. We say we’re a nation of laws. We say we’re a people of logic. We are able to think and come up with abstract thoughts. This discussion proves otherwise. If the logic used for the stripping us of our Constitutional Right to bear arms is valid, then the logic is valid for other reasons as well.
Those that are pro-gun control use a few arguments for this.
One: Guns kill people.
Two: We cannot be trusted to use them the right way.
Three: We are safer without guns. Let’s brake this down.
One: Guns Kill People.
The first thing I want to state is a gun is an inanimate object. It can do nothing without outside influence. If I sat a gun on a table and left it there, went out and had dinner, it would still be there when I get back; it would still have the same amount of ammunition. It would not have killed anyone. I know this is a very basic and ridiculous example. But, it makes a point. Guns don’t kill people, same as cars don’t kill people. Food doesn’t make people overweight. Text messages don’t kill people. None of these things can do anything unless someone does something first. Choices! A car cannot kill anyone unless it’s being used by a person. Food doesn’t make someone fat, unless that individual chooses to eat too much of it. Text messages don’t cause car accidents, unless someone decides to text while driving. (Then the odds increase). You see, our choices make all the difference in the world. We can kill, we can choose to let live…
Two: We Cannot be Trusted to Use them the Right Way.
This is another illogical argument that’s being thrown out there. The ones that the public elected to office now tell us that we are not responsible enough to be trusted with guns. But, we’re responsible enough to elect them?! We, the people, are or we’re not. We cannot be one but not the other. This is worse than illogical; it’s offensive.
Three: We are Safer Without Guns
I continue to hear supporters of gun control state that the streets, our lives would be safer without guns. Well, I have one thing to say to that… tell that to the criminals! Those that break the laws will not suddenly stop and think, “Hey, this is a gun free zone, we can’t go in here.” NO. They’ll say, “Hey, this is a gun free zone, this’ll be easy!” the reason that people are being killed is not a gun issue… it’s a heart issue. Criminals do not care! They break the law, so more laws will only mean that they will break more laws. The only ones that would be affected by more gun laws are the law abiding citizens, and guess what – they are not the ones killing others.
If we allow the government to continue to take away our Constitutional Right to bear arms, what’s next? Freedom to assemble? Unlawful search and seizure?
This will be just the beginning. An unarmed populace is a populace vulnerable to a hostile enemy… Domestic or abroad.
