Learn to Hear His Voice First

If I could give one piece of advice to my younger self, it would be this:
Slow down long enough to hear God before rushing ahead with your own plans.
For much of my life, I believed progress came from doing more, working harder, and pushing forward faster. When I faced uncertainty, my instinct was to react immediately. I wanted answers now, solutions now, and direction now.
What I’ve learned over the years is that many of my biggest mistakes came not from a lack of effort, but from a lack of stillness.
God often speaks in the space we try hardest to avoid.
Before He revealed His vision to people throughout Scripture, He first called them to listen. Moses paused before the burning bush. Samuel learned to recognize God’s voice. Habakkuk stood at his watchpost and waited.
The older I get, the more convinced I become that clarity rarely begins with action.
It begins with surrender.
If I were speaking to someone younger, I would tell them:
- Spend more time seeking God than seeking answers.
- Learn the difference between reacting and responding.
- Don’t confuse busyness with purpose.
- Write down what God is teaching you.
- Obey the next thing He shows you before demanding the entire plan.
Vision is usually revealed one faithful step at a time.
The truth is, most believers don’t miss God’s direction because He isn’t speaking. They miss it because they’re moving too fast to listen.
So if you’re younger than me; and honestly, even if you’re not, that’s the advice I’d give:
Be still. Listen carefully. Respond faithfully.
Everything else becomes much clearer from there.
