YESTERDAY’S MANNA IS ONLY GOOD FOR THE SABBATH
As I think and ponder the words and scriptures I have deep in my heart, I realize that most have been memorized many yesterday’s ago. Years have gone by and my familiarity with the Word allows me to find most anything I need fairly quickly. But those verses and promises are not deep within my heart.
When troubles come, I have many testimonies to look back on. These memories, testimonies, that come to mind first are from many yesterday’s ago. From bags of groceries on our front porch to unexpected checks in the mail, from renting houses not for rent and being hired by companies not hiring. The LORD has been good to us! Times of provision, gifts of faith, supernatural wisdom. These examples are from years back.
Yes, the LORD was showing Himself faithful. Laying a foundation for me. Maybe I needed those memorable testimonies early on? Maybe?
But, just maybe, I was anticipating them then?
As I’ve contemplated this in my spirit, the Holy Spirit brought me to the story of the Israelites wandering around in the desert. In His faithfulness, God made manna (bread) rain down from heaven. The people were to gather enough for the day. But on the sixth day, they gathered twice as much. (Ex 16:21-22)
Why?
“Tomorrow is to be a day of Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD.” (Ex 16:23) and “So the people rested on the seventh day.” (Ex 16:30)
So, what was (is) He trying to tell me?
YESTERDAY’S MANNA IS ONLY GOOD FOR THE SABBATH.
In other words, those things, the memorized scripture verses, the testimonies of all those yesterday’s ago, will only sustain me while I’m resting. If I choose to march forward against the enemy and his forces, if I choose to live victoriously today for the LORD, I cannot rely on yesterday’s manna.
Jesus tells us that He is the bread of life in John 6:35. He also tells us that we should ask Him for our daily bread in Matthew 6:11.
While talking with the Samaritan Woman at the well, He tells her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” (John 4:10) and continues, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13)
So, daily, we should be asking Jesus for our sustenance for that day. We need to spend time with Him and be fed by Him. If we want to be used by Him and to grow in the “grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”, (II Peter 3:18) we cannot rely on yesterday’s manna. We must daily feed from the Bread of Life and drink from His Living Water.

What would we look like if we gained our physical nutrition from the amount of Bread and Living Water we consume each week? Would we be malnourished and dehydrated? Each day our physical bodies need nourishment and water. We need these things to be physically healthy. How much more do you think we need to nourish our spirit? Will a meal a week, every Sunday, nourish our physical bodies? Why do we tend to think that our spirit is any different?
Let’s all consider this! Let’s feed from the Bread of Life daily and drink from His Living Water daily. Let’s see how much better we feel spirit, soul, and body when we do.
